"It does not require a majority to prevail,
but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds."

SAMPLE COMMENTS FROM A MULTIPLE USE POINT OF VIEW
High priority comments are in bold.

Ø For the record, I do not want any new wilderness in this area.
Ø Urge Congress to release the Ten Lakes WSA and then manage the area for semi-primitive recreation with a balance of motorized and non-motorized use.
Ø To comply with the legal requirements of taking public input, you must disclose all decisions, resolutions, actions or agreements that arise out of any private or joint meetings with the parties in the lawsuit just as soon as they occur.

VEGETATION MANAGEMENT
Ø Timber harvest for fuel reduction, jobs and forest health are the top priorities of vegetation management
Ø Expedite salvage of ALL merchantable timber after fires
Ø Average yearly harvest must equal net forest growth.

TRAVEL MANAGEMENT
Ø No reduction in snowmobile access to WSA
Ø No reduction in snowmobile access outside WSA.

Ø Snowmobile access outside the WSA should be encouraged with new trails. This will take some pressure off of the WSA
Ø No reduction in snowmobile grooming
Ø No reduction in snowmobile season.

Ø Instead, extend the season to April 1 because studies show that most bears in high country do not leave dens before then.
Ø No reduction in summer motorized use for sightseeing, berry picking and other recreational uses
There are so few summer roads open that I must insist that there will be no new closures.
Ø No road obliteration
Ø Make access for fire fighting top priority.

Ø Open old roads to ATVs and Trail Bikes.
There are no motorized trails in this area and 158 miles of non-motorized trail. That lack of balance needs to be addressed. At least one long (20 miles) or two short ATV loop trails. Loop trails should be at least 75% trail or closed road rather than open road and they must access some high elevation views.
Ø Consider new motorized summer and winter trail possibilities on Burma Rd, Williams/Krinklehorn or Deep Cr. Loops, Marston/Water Cr or Patrick Cr loop, Stahl/Clarence, Williams/Bluesky loop

Recreation Management
Ø Move toward a balance in recreation uses (top priority)
Ø Restore and increase motorized access (see Travel Mgmt)
Ø Build warming hut/pavilion at Therriault Lakes.

Ø Locate and designate a motorized play area
This could be in an area that does not have sensitive environmental issues like stream crossings, erosion, grizzly bears.
Ø Retain and create new motorized dispersed camping sites.
The single unit pullouts along Grave Cr. are a good example.
Ø Work with user groups to ID and maintain desired trails
Ø Make travel maps available at many locations

Fire Management
Ø Reduce fire fuels in the WUI (top priority)
Ø Reduce fire fuels beyond the WUI as well
Ø Create strategic fire breaks
Ø Use gates instead of earth berms to close roads

Firefighters must wait for a cat if an earth berm is in the way.
Ø Give initial attack teams tools and permission in advance to open gates and cross streams
Ø Never rip a road that provides primary access into watershed
.
They are needed for fire fighting
Ø Adopt aggressive policy of putting fires out early
Aggressive policy means putting fires out early, getting crews on the ground at dawn, doing some work at night, having plenty of trained crews with good equipment ready to go at beginning of fire season
Ø Fight ALL wildfires in Galton area
Ø Use prescribed fire only after treatment
Prescribed fire is dangerous and wasteful. However, it maybe necessary to treat WUI inside of WSA. Extreme caution is mandatory. Before burning removal of ladder fuels with hand tools and horse logging may be necessary

Use a forest plan amendment if necessary to implement these needed changes.

General comments solicited by USFS not covered above:
Ø How do you use the project area?
Ø What do you like or not like about USFS management in the area?
Ø Are there any safety concerns that USFS should be aware of?
Ø What activities would you like to see in the area?

If you are using our sample comments, it is a good idea to state at the bottom that these are your personal comments and that you support everything in them and request they be included in the official record for the project. Also ask them to put you on their contact list for this project and give them your mailing and email addresses

We recommend you read our suggestions and then write out the ones you like in your own words. You can add your comments to the page we have started for you or use a blank page. Do not forget to sign and include your contact information, especially your address. Personal comments are better than form letters.
They are looking for very specific comments based on personal use and knowledge but you should also include general comments about how you think the area should be managed. Do not hesitate to demand actions that they claim are outside their power because they do not reveal the full extent of their discretionary powers.
You can also take the packets home and fill them out.

Don’t forget to send them in before March 31.

RE: My comments on the Galton Project

Thank you for this opportunity to comment on the Galton Project. My primary concern is that Galton should not reduce opportunities for recreation, timber harvest, fire fuels reduction, aggressive fire fighting and improvements to forest health. That is why I oppose any new wilderness recommendations in this area. For the same reasons, I also oppose additional road restrictions and road decommissioning. Furthermore, I would like to see an increase in motorized access to restore some balance between competing uses and I would like to see an increase in vegetation management for fuel reduction and jobs. I believe these increases can and should be accomplished without a reduction in the quality of our recreation experience in this area.
