MAKING COMMENTS ON FOREST SERVICE PLANS AND PROJECTS
If you have specific knowledge
about an area or issue, share that with the planning team and make a
request. Always finish by making a request.
Be polite. It is GOOD to be
passionate but it is counterproductive to get mad or make threats or
unsubstantiated accusations.
Back up your statements with
quotes, personal or professional experience, and references. Tell why you
are in favor or against something. For instance, if you don’t like road
closures tell them how they affect you and others.
State who you are
and why you are taking the trouble to comment.
Sum up your comments and your
requests.
ORAL COMMENTS
Get there early and
sign up at the door to make a comment. Otherwise you may have to wait
until the end.
You will have a time
limit. Usually 2 to 5 minutes. Make your most important comments
first.
Write your comments
down - at least make notes. It is alright to read your prepared comments.
If someone before
you makes a comment that you want to respond to you will have to shorten
your other comments.
Stick to your main
points and avoid long detailed explanations.
Stay focused.
WRITTEN COMMENTS
You have the ability
to make lengthy detailed comments but remember someone will have to read
and summarize so don’t put them to sleep.
Personalized
comments are the best. Even if you use someone else’s comments put them
in your own words or at least make the statement that you agree with these
comments .
Give your address .
Always ask to be
placed on the mailing list so you can be kept informed.
