YEAR IN REVIEW
January
· Started the process of
creating a new 501-c3 organization
· Several members
participated in the 3 day USFS Robert-Wedge
"collaboration" meetings.
· MFMU members Hodgeboom,
Buentemeir, Taber, Samuelson, and Ryan were appointed to Flathead
County Natural Resource Use Committee which met regularly all year
to produce a draft Flathead County Natural Resource Use
Policy. This policy will serve as a guide for County
Commissioners to use, especially in Federal natural
resource projects as a Cooperating Agency.
Feb.
· Sent letter to Regional
Forester regarding manipulation of the Robert Wedge collaboration
process.
· Started the Forest Plan
Revision Network Meetings and assisted Rep. Verdell Jackson in
conducting a followup survey of the Robert-Wedge collaboration
group which exposed the biased manipulation of that process by the
Forest Service. Results sent to Congressional Delegation and
press.
· Started planning
water sampling for Robert fire.
· Official comment on the
USFS Proposed Action for Roberts/ Wedge Fire
March
· Attended Swan EcoCenter
sponsored meeting on Federal acquisition of Plum Creek lands in
the Swan Valley.
· Participate in Firewise
workshop on fire fuel reduction for private landowners.
· Began water monitoring in
Canyon Creek
April
· Official comment during
the Flathead Forest Plan Revision Scoping period
· Official comment on the
Bull Trout critical habitat issue
· Attended workshop on US
Cooperating Agency Status.
· Several members
participated in a series of Forest Plan revision meetings in
Bigfork, Kalispell & Whitefish as well as meetings on the
Kootenai revision in Libby and Eureka.
· Official comment during
West Side Reservoir Fire Salvage scoping period
May
· Filed injunction in Wash.
D. C. asking court to stop USFS from implementing Amendment 19 and
later amendments and to stop additional amendments on all Forests
with Plans over 15 years old
· Helped to get signatures
for the I-147 initiative
· Met with Families for
Outdoor recreation and other motorized recreation groups in
Belgrade regarding State wide multiple use umbrella group.
· Sponsored a
candidate forum for primary election candidates.
· Assisted Rep. Verdell
Jackson sponsor three public meetings for Forest Plan Revison
· Completed water sampling
on Canyon Creek
June
· Prepared response to USFS
and intervenors objection to our injunction request.
· Participated in State
audit of application of Best Management Practices (BMP’s).
July
· D. C. Judge rejected the
environmentalists claim for change of venue in lawsuit
· Field trip with USFS on
Robert-Wedge salvage proposal.
· Assisted Verdell Jackson
with meeting on water rights at fairgounds
· Kootenai National Forest
opened a closed road after several contacts and discussions with
MFMU
August
· Official comment on the
Robert/Wedge Fire DEIS.
· Oral hearing on
injunction request in Wash. DC. Judge rules against request.
· MFMU participated in Fair
parade and with information booth during fair.
· Incorporated Montanans
For Multiple Use Education Fund as a Montana corporation. MFMUEF
will apply for 501c3 statues with IRS
September
· Participated in Outdoor
Expo at the Majestic Arena
· Attended annual Western
Environmental Trade Association meeting.
· MFMU assisted with
distributing information on Inititive 147.
· Participated in Flathead
on the Move steering committee which sponsors community forums on
economic growth. First Forum Sept. 21.
· Official comment on West
Side Reservoir Fire Salvage Project DEIS
Oct.
· Held a Candidates forum
at the Co. Fair grounds
· Our lawyer Mark Pollot in
Kalispell to hold meetings with MFMU Board and lawsuit
co-plaintiffs.
· Discovery work on
lawsuit.
· Board met with producers
of Fire Next Time and public preview of film.
· Participated in Flathead
Landscape Analysis project aimed at modeling growth
scenarios for valley
· Appealed the FNF decision
on Wedge/Roberts Salvage Sale. Opposed to road rip.
Nov.
· Presented supplemental
economic information prepared by MFMU on relationship of timber
supply and timber industry to economic health of
Flathead County. Made recommendations for community to
get involved in timber supply issue on public lands.
· Sponsored public showing
of Fire Next Time green propaganda film. Information
developed by Dave Skinner provided on the film’s sponsors,
producers, public TV executives, and Congressionals urging people
to get their opinions of film to these key people.
Dec.
· Worded on legal response
to motion by opponents in the lawsuit
· Sponsored a benefit for
the Thornton’s at the Stillwater Grange to help with expenses of
their son critically injured in motorcycle accident.
· MFMU sponsored public
showing of Fire Next Time in Plains, MT.
· Attended Wedge/Roberts
appeal meeting
In addition to all of the above, MFMU published four newsletters,
updated the website several times, conducted economic research in
several areas, researched and wrote legal briefs and responses,
disseminated information on public land use issues via email and
monitored state and national political and public land activities. |
